1 in 7 People suffer from IBS
IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, is a common gut disorder that can cause abdominal discomfort, bloating, and changes in bowel habits like constipation or diarrhoea.
It's not caused by a single thing, but factors like routine changes, stress, infections, bathroom habits, and diet can trigger symptoms.
Along with tummy pain and irregular bathroom visits, people with IBS may also deal with bloating (like having a balloon in the belly), increased abdominal size, excess gas, and a strong urge to go to the bathroom. It's a chronic condition, but managing it through lifestyle changes and medical advice can help improve daily life.
What is a FODMAP?
FODMAPs, a group of sugars, pose challenges for people with IBS as they are not fully digested or absorbed in the intestines. They have a tendency to attract water and move slowly through the small intestine. Upon reaching the large intestine, they undergo fermentation by gut bacteria, leading to the production of gas. As a result, the intestinal wall can stretch and expand, causing heightened sensations of pain and discomfort in individuals with IBS.
Many foods that are considered healthy in fact may trigger reactions such as Milk, apples, onions and garlic.
