What Is PHGG? Partially Hydrolysed Guar Gum and Sunfiber® Explained
Partially hydrolysed guar gum—usually shortened to PHGG—is a soluble prebiotic fibre made from guar beans. Unlike traditional guar gum, PHGG undergoes a controlled process that reduces its viscosity, allowing it to dissolve easily without heavily thickening food or drinks.
PHGG is commonly used as a daily fibre supplement because it is clear-mixing, tasteless and generally well tolerated.
What is Sunfiber®?
Sunfiber® is a scientifically studied branded form of PHGG. It provides soluble prebiotic fibre that helps feed beneficial bacteria in the gut and supports digestive health and bowel regularity.
Sunfiber® can be mixed into water, coffee, tea, smoothies, yoghurt or food. Because it does not have the gritty texture or strong flavour associated with some fibre supplements, it can be easier to include in a daily routine.
Is Sunfiber® the same as PHGG?
Sunfiber® is PHGG, but not every PHGG product is Sunfiber®. Sunfiber® is a specific branded ingredient with published scientific research supporting its use.
When comparing products, check the ingredient list rather than relying only on the words “fibre supplement.” Some products combine several fibre sources or include sweeteners, flavours and fillers.
What are the benefits of PHGG?
PHGG is a soluble prebiotic fibre that may help:
• Support bowel regularity
• Feed beneficial gut bacteria
• Support a healthy gut microbiome
• Increase daily dietary fibre intake
• Provide a gentler alternative to some traditional fibre supplements
Individual responses to fibre can vary. Increasing fibre gradually and drinking sufficient water may help your digestive system adjust.
Is PHGG Low FODMAP?
Low FODMAP suitability depends on the specific product and serving size. Freed’s 100% Sunfiber® PHGG is Monash University Low FODMAP Certified™, providing added confidence for people following a Low FODMAP approach.
How do you take PHGG?
PHGG can be added to hot or cold drinks and soft foods. It is best to follow the serving directions on the product packaging and introduce additional fibre gradually if you are not accustomed to taking it.
Freed’s serving provides 6g of dietary fibre from 7g of Sunfiber® PHGG. People with medical conditions, persistent digestive symptoms, or questions about using fibre supplements should speak with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Choosing a PHGG supplement
When comparing PHGG products, consider:
• Whether PHGG is the only ingredient
• The amount of dietary fibre per serve
• Low FODMAP certification where relevant
• Whether it contains fillers, flavours or sweeteners
• How easily it dissolves
• The number of serves and total cost
Freed’s prebiotic gut fibre contains 100% Sunfiber® PHGG with no fillers, additives or sweeteners. It is clear-mixing, tasteless and available in 30, 60 and 90-serve options.
